Rewatching bits of episode 64, the one where Chibi-Usa tries to go back to the future but ends up turning off gravity within the building instead. At the end, she slips up and mentions something about “going home”, and so the other girls start trying to grill her for info (since she has been nothing but suspicious this whole time and they have no idea who she really is or where she’s from). They’re kind of closing in and pressuring her a little to finally spill the beans, and it looks like she’s about to, and then Mamoru chimes in and says “hey girls butt out everyone has secrets ok if she doesn’t want to tell you that’s fine”.
The first time I watched it I was like, “GOD DAMMIT MAMORU yes everyone has secrets but she has been nothing but a shit the whole time!! She shot your girlfriend with a fake gun, demanded the Silver Crystal and has brainwashed her entire family, I think this time we can put a little pressure on her!!”
Rewatching it now I realised, shit.
They’re asking her questions like, “Tell us where you’re from”, “Who/where is back home”, etc. Grilling her (justifiably, but) for information even when it’s obvious that the questions make her upset.
Dude’s an orphan. An orphan in Japan. Can you imagine how many sore points that’s hitting for him? How many times this has come up for him - people asking him where he’s from, what his family’s like, etc.? How many people must have ostracized him after learning the truth, before he learned how to properly deflect the questions? He himself doesn’t have an answer for those questions because he doesn’t even remember them.
I’M SORRY I JUDGED YOU MAMORU. EVEN IF IT JUST WAS SO YOU COULD APPEAR TO BE A BIT MORE OF A DICK AND DELAY PLOT DEVELOPMENT TO KEEP THE MYSTERY IN THE AIR, I FORGIVE YOUUU.
This afternoon I was astonished to learn of director Morita Yoshimitsu’s death. This astonishment and a deep grief still feel like they’re overwhelming me. A great director has been lost, leaving many people in sorrow.
