Mooning Mercury

This discovery image provides the first evidence that Mercury has a small natural satellite or moon. Visible as a small bright spot in this image taken in March 31, 2012 by MESSENGER, the moon is approximately 70 meters in diameter and orbits Mercury at a mean distance of 14,300 km.

A proposal to name the moon “Caduceus,” after the staff carried by the Roman god Mercury, has been submitted by the MESSENGER team to the International Astronomical Union, the body responsible for assigning names to celestial objects.

This discovery presents an unprecedented opportunity for a return of samples from the Mercury system. In an emergency meeting yesterday evening The MESSENGER team took a unanimous decision to use the remaining propellant to crash MESSENGER into Caduceus. With the right timing and trajectory, MESSENGER will impart just enough momentum to the moon to break it free of Mercury’s gravity well and set it on an Earth-crossing trajectory suitable for recovery as a Mercury meteorite.

If Caduceus is successfully released from the pull of Mercury and placed on a course to reach Earth, we can expect the moon to arrive at Earth by 2014. The MESSENGER team have designed a trajectory that will bring the moon to Earth at a remote location on the Wilkes Land ice sheet in Antarctica within reach for retrieval by the scientific staff at the U.S.-operated McMurdo Station.

Guys.  Guys.  Mercury has a moon.

And we are going to steal it.

Unsure of exactly how much of it is an April Fool’s joke, but if the answer is “all of it”, good. We’d have an excuse to basically make a Sailor Loki.

Did end up finally drawing more of them!

Personally, I imagine that most of their crazy hair decs only appear when they’re transformed, like Chibi Moon’s dumpling guards.

I want to draw lots and lots of pictures of these girls.

One day I will write a Pokemon/Sailor Moon fanfic. One day.

A question a while ago on Formspring about differences between the girls’ appearances + being bored and wanting to doodle = this exercise.

I love Naoko, but (and it’s not entirely her fault) she really only ever draws two different body types, regardless of a character’s age or informed physical traits. So here’s how I imagine the girls’ bodies looking.

Usagi: Chubby, obviously, and the shortest; traits we’re told she has but never really shown. I think her weight would shift as she went through varying periods of dieting, eating and exercise, so here is probably her average. Even when she gains weight, I don’t think she’d have a very large bust.

Ami: Someone who doesn’t always remember to eat, watches their diet from a nutritionist’s point of view, and swims regularly, I imagine Ami being very, very thin (“Rika Izumi” thin). Her doctor mother has ensured she has good posture, but a lack of self-confidence means that her shoulders are somewhat rounded and sloped. Flat-chest, flat feet.

Rei: The same height as Usagi, as she’s implied to be in the manga. A slim, athletic body (I imagine she’s learned some self-defense from her grandfather, as she appears to know at least some basic martial arts). Not too curvaceous but not too shapeless, a body that looks good swathed in a kimono. Good butt for high heels! Good muscle definition, too, but not a lot of muscle mass. Very very slender joints (ankles, wrists, etc.) and small feet. Again, fairly flat-chested.

Makoto: Welp. Obviously she is the tallest, and she also has the most “talent”. I imagine she’s also very very curvy and muscular. Traditional “hourglass” figure - wide shoulders and chest as well as very wide (“child-bearing”?) hips. Her strength comes from (and is exercised by) manual labour, not going to the gym, so her arms + legs are more defined than her abs or chest. Nice legs.

Minako: A very curvy, toned body from an active and athletic lifestyle. Best intentional muscle definition of the girls; tallest + biggest bust after Jupiter. Marilyn Monroe proportions. However, she has thick ankles and wrists that she feels self-conscious about sometimes, and is envious of Rei’s. “Bubbly”.

That’s it. I may do the Outers some other time, but I think these 5 show the greatest variety anyway.

Having been a swimmer myself, I think ami’s shoulders would have been a little more muscular due to the dreaded man shoulder curse that plague female swimmers.

Hmm. I never really imagined Ami as someone who tried to swim quickly or competitively (even though she’s good at it [because she’s good at everything in the anime]), rather as something she did at her own pace to relax and meditate on her thoughts. So it wouldn’t affect the shape of her body to that extent. However! Thankyou for giving me a legitimate reason why I imagine Michiru with broader/thicker shoulders! I imagine Michiru as having a very soft and kind of flubby body, except for these ridiculously sculpted shoulders. So now I have an excuse!
