This is an old one; an article from the Australian kid’s magazine “K-Zone” from June 2002. Because their taste in fonts is unfortunate, here’s the text:

Q) Why do the girls have different school uniforms?

A) Raye wears a grey school uniform and goes to T.A. Private Girls School, while Serena, Amy and Lita go to Juuban Jr High. Lita wears a brown uniform because Juuban Jr. High didn’t have any girl’s uniforms that would fit her (she is very tall), so she still wears her former school’s uniform.

Q) Why do they wear sailor suits?

A) The sailor suit is a common school uniform in Japan, especially for girls in junior high.

The History

Sailor Moon was created in February 1992 when Naoko Takeuchi, a young female artist and chemistry student, started her own comic. It was an instant hit with Japanese girls and shortly after it was transformed into an animated series. Now it features in 18 volumes of manga comic books, 200 television episodes and three movies. There is even a live stage musical version in Japan!

I am actually kind of ridiculously proud of this? It explains stuff that the Dub tried to cover up/just didn’t bother to explain, including the fact that it takes place in Japan and that the girls are Japanese. I like to think that a little Australian kid who started watching the Dub had a better go at it with this in hand than other kids.

Chieko Kawabe for Kindai, June 2004.  I also find it very interesting that they picked Chieko for this feature!  Her music career must have been taking off at the time.  I continue to hope for history to repeat itself, despite the fact that this was seven years ago.

Chieko’s looking adorable as usual. I, too, want a shirt about disappointing sexual encounters.
