There’s cels of Toon Makers’ Sailor Moon popping up on ebay! This is also known as Saban Moon, and I don’t know how many of the cels are still up.

Most of the Toon Makers Moon nightmare was awful, but I’m digging the Sailor Soldier designs. Once I, you know, divorce them from the characters they’re meant to be.

These are really neat! Who is that with red hair? Mercury? I love it. And Luna(/Artemis?) is the cutest! I would totally watch this as long as they agreed to never mention Sailor Moon or anything SM related in it.

I would be on board with this being made into its own show if

1) They either renamed it, or the original Sailor Moon anime was dubbed and aired alongside it so that it wasn’t the only ‘Sailor Moon’ in the West
2) They changed the outfits to be either more or less like sailors, because at the moment I can’t stand them. They look like those knock-off figurines with shoddy painting. The lack of bows is really painful. I get that the ‘sailor suit’ as a Japanese uniform doesn’t exist in the US, but, uh, sailors still do. Their current attempts to westernise the girls’ uniforms is hideous so they should’ve just gone full-throttle and totally remade the outfits to look like a Western idea of a ‘Sailor’.

I’d be in support of it because, when it comes down to it, they’re a superhero group as US kids know them, made entirely of girls. Tuxedo Mask didn’t feature in that promotion at all. You might think, “Well, obviously. If they’re pitching it as Sailor Moon, they’re going to put a focus on the Sailors.” Is that so obvious? For comparison, despite having already dubbed all the episodes, the 2000 Nelvana dub of Cardcaptor Sakura chose to air episode 8 as the first episode, despite it being in the middle of a plot - because it’s when the main male character was introduced. It might not have been as bad as previous years, but it was still very much a time where producers thought a show wouldn’t perform well without a male character to focus on, that female characters wouldn’t be able to carry a series on their own. Because it was believed that girls would watch a series with boys in it but boys wouldn’t watch a series about girls. Now, while I have no doubts that male characters, romance, and probably even Tuxedo Mask would have been a big feature of Toon Makers’s Sailor Moon, it wasn’t what they chose to focus on for their promo. Which I appreciate.

It’s also got a pretty diverse cast. I know that was “du jour” in the late 90s to have POC and other minorities in the cast, but not in the lead role. But if, beyond the visuals, it was anything at all like the Sailor Moon we know, the fact that they’re not the “main character” doesn’t make them any less awesome. It’s a little difficult to tell from the grainy footage but I think it’s Mercury who’s in the wheel chair. A wheel chair that she doesn’t magically stop needing after she transforms! In fact, it becomes a weapon! It’s kind of cheesy but it’s also a pretty cool sentiment.

Basically, I would really like to learn more about what this bizarro-Sailor Moon world would have turned out to look like. I get massive Sabrina the Teenage Witch vibes from it, a series I love, so it would have been interesting to say the least.

… Although now I’m really sad for the actresses involved in it, to get past the casting and audition stages, be selected, shoot all these scenes, get excited about the prospect of starring in a new TV show, then get told it’s not happening.
